Understanding haematuria
Haematuria means blood in the urine. It may be visible (pink, red or brown urine) or found only on a urine test. It can be painless, and it can come and go.
Common causes include infection, stones and prostate enlargement, but sometimes it points to something that needs closer attention. Because you cannot tell the cause from the colour alone, it should always be checked, even if it stops by itself.

Common questions
Still unsure? Send your question on WhatsApp and the team will guide you.
The blood stopped. Do I still need to be seen?
Yes. Bleeding can stop and return, and the underlying cause may still be present. A check is advised even if it was a single episode.
Is painless blood in the urine less serious?
Not necessarily. Pain is not a reliable guide, so painless bleeding should be assessed just as carefully.
What is cystoscopy?
A thin camera is passed into the bladder to look at its lining. Your doctor will explain what to expect, and whether it is needed in your case.
